A Shrine Under Threat in Uganda

Visual documentation of the items found in one of the Structure's of Adrian's Shrine Complex

Adrian owns a large shrine complex in rural Uganda, which is likely to be considerably affected by a linear development project through the area. The shrine setup on Adrian’s land is complex with multiple associated structures and places of significance. Two of the main structures are traditional round wattle and daub huts with thatched roofs. The largest one has both a prominent entry way and a small attached storage area. The floor is covered with mats and skins, and the centre of the round room is filled with multiple objects arranged in a very specific manner. With the help of Adrian, I photographed each and every item and took notes on how they were used. This image is a visual summary of that documentation.

Shrines are part of the Bugandan traditional belief system common in some areas of Uganda, in which Ancestral Spirits play a central role. Ritual items play a significant role, with each having a specific function or symbolism, and an association with one or more Ancestral Spirits or traditional practices.

Adrian is of the opinion that the number of people subscribing to traditional beliefs is increasing compared with his childhood, the reason for which he thinks is because people are facing more problems such as illness and financial concerns, and the types of issues are more complicated than they were in previous generations. His shrine caters to the local community and a large number of followers from other Districts and Regions who come to him to ask the Spirits for help and guidance.
